The condition may get aggravated due to sweat and friction and lead to fungal and yeast infections and also sexual problems as a result of the feelings of embarrassment and discomfort. It strikes middle-aged and older people rather than younger ones.

It appears on groin ,armpit,buttocks,under breasts,belly button,behind knees,in children,ears,on eyelids,face,on feet,inner thigh,neck,nails,navel, & on scalp.

  • The first symptom is the appearance of smooth patches of red, inflamed skin in the skin folds.
  • The affected area becomes very tender and painful.
  • The moistness of the area affected does not allow the formation of scales and thus, the lesions are smooth and shiny.
  • It is very irritating due to the location of lesions which occur in the armpit, groin, buttocks and under the breasts.
  • The crease in the lesion sometimes opens causing infection and bleeding.

  • Like other types of psoriasis it is caused due to genetics and is passed down through families.
  • Overweight and obese persons are more prone to this form of psoriasis due to the presence of deeper skin folds.
  • Friction and dampness caused due to sweating and the skin rubbing against itself.

Inverse psoriasis Treatment

Due to the location of the lesions treatment becomes difficult. The skin of skin folds is more sensitive than other parts of the body thus, increasing the risk of reaction to topical medications. Therefore, doctors are required to treat the accompanying fungal and yeast infections.

  • Corticosteroids. They are used to suppress the immune system and reduce inflammation. They contain skin-thinning properties and should be used with caution on the already thin skin in the folds. Sometimes diluted topical steroids are used for this reason.
  • Coal tar. This preparation is used in gel and ointment form to soothe the lesions. It can also be added to bath water in its liquid form.
  • Calcipotriene. This is a synthetic form of Vitamin D3 used in ointments and creams to slow down skin cell turnover. It causes irritation and should not be used on the genital area.
  • Castellani’s paint. This is an active form of phenol which can be bought over the counter. It is a liquid that is painted on the moist lesions in the skin folds to dry them.
  • Phototherapy. UVB rays are administered through sunlight or sun lamps under medical supervision.
  • Systemic medications. These are used to treat severe cases through pills and injections. Immunosuppressive medicines such as methotrexate, cyclosporine and biologic drugs are employed.

Inverse psoriasis Home remedies

There are various home remedies which can be followed to take care of the symptoms as well as to cure the condition.

  • Baking soda. It can be used to relieve itchiness. For this dissolve 1/3 cup of baking soda in a gallon of water. Soak a washcloth in it and apply on the affected areas after wringing it out. This can be repeated several times.
  • Coconut oil. It is an excellent natural remedy. Virgin coconut oil should be used daily either as part of the diet or for topical application. About two tablespoons should be consumed daily directly or mixed in a fruit smoothie, used to sauté vegetables or used as butter substitute.  It can also be applied topically on the affected area up to three times daily.
  • Petroleum jelly. This acts as a very effective moisturizer in controlling the build-up of skin and should be applied daily, especially immediately after a bath or shower.
  • Sunlight. Moderate exposure to sunlight is very beneficial. It enhances the production of Vitamin D which is an inexpensive and effective cure.
